Kampot Pepper is a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) certified product from Cambodia known for its intense aroma,, complex, sweet-spicy flavour with hints of eucalyptus and mint. Produced in black, red, and white varieties, it is grown in the Kampot province using organic methods and hand-selected for quality.
Kampot pepper is a high-quality peppercorn grown in Cambodia's Kampot province. The region's soil, humidity, and altitude give the pepper its unique aroma and flavor. It holds official protection in Europe and France, which helps keep standards and support local growers.
Kampot pepper nearly disappeared during the 1970s but has since been revived and is now a luxury spice used by Michelin-star chefs worldwide.
Cambodian pepper production collapsed under the rule of the Khmer Rouge beginning in the 1970’s. Farmers were forced to produce food crops instead of peppercorns. It wasn’t until the early 2000’s that pepper farmers returned to their traditions and saved this pepper cultivar from disappearing entirely.
The amazing Kampot peppercorns are grown in the foothills of Kon Sat commune (Kampot, Cambodia). The local terroir and organic farming give rise to the amazing flavours in our pepper berries.
Kampot pepper is widely considered one of the world’s finest peppers, protected by geographical indication (GI) status. Grown between the mountains and the sea in southern Cambodia, the mineral-rich soil and sea breezes give it extraordinary complexity.
It’s celebrated for its layered aroma, floral notes, and long, evolving heat — making it a favorite of high-end restaurants.

16/02/2026 La Plantation Kampot, a pioneering family-run operation, has obtained European organic accreditation (EU Regulation 2018/848) for its central warehouse in Europe. This milestone, validated by Ecocert, simplifies the export of its IGP spices to the European Union, a rapidly expanding market for sustainable products.
Costs reflect limited growing area, manual harvesting, strict quality rules tied to protected status, and sustainable, small-scale farming. Fair trade programs and careful processing also raise prices but help ensure farmers are paid fairly.
Look for labels like PGI or AOC that confirm origin. Buy from reputable suppliers or producers that list Kampot as the source. Trusted brands often note partnerships with local farmer associations and traceability information.
Kampot pepper is the first Cambodian product to receive the French appellation d'origine contrôlée—a geographical indication that protects trade names for special food products, like Champagne. The European Union also granted Kampot pepper protected geographical indication status in 2016. This protection status ensures farmers are paid fairly for their pepper and that the quality is held to a high standard.
