Turmeric is an ancient spice, a native of South East Asia, used from antiquity as dye and a condiment. In many languages turmeric is simply named as “yellow root”.  Turmeric is the rhizome of a ginger-like plant. It is usually available ground, as a bright yellow, fine powder. The whole turmeric is a tuberous rhizome, with a rough, segmented skin.

The rhizome is yellowish-brown with a dull orange interior that looks bright yellow when powdered. The harvest starts when the stems begin to fade, about ten months after planting. The rhizomes are carefully dug, cured and prepared for the market by being boiled, cleaned, dried in the sun for about ten days, and polished. During the curing process the product loses about three quarters of its original weight. Cured turmeric is sorted into ‘fingers’, ‘rounds’, and ‘splits’.

Turmeric powder is a bright yellow powder made by dry grinding of mature turmeric rhizomes. The use of turmeric for coloring & flavoring food, for cosmetic purposes and for medicinal properties.

Turmeric is highly therapeutic and is used in various drugs and pharmaceutics mainly because of its immunity boosting and anti-oxidant properties.
This spice has almost no calories and zero cholesterol. It is rich in dietary fiber, Iron, Potassium, magnesium &vitamin B6.

Flavor-wise, it is overwhelmingly earthy and bitter, almost musky, with a bit of peppery spice. That deep, kind of implacable flavor in most curry powders? Yep: That's turmeric. And while the flavor turmeric offers is huge, its color is just as remarkable.

Have you noticed lattes, ice cream and smoothies with a tawny hue? That could be a sign of a not-so-secret ingredient: turmeric. The botanical is omnipresent in health food aisles, in the form of pills and powders.

Turmeric, native to South Asia, is one of the fastest-growing dietary supplements. In 2018 products racked up an estimated $328 million in sales in the United States, a more than sevenfold increase from a decade earlier, according to a report from Nutrition Business Journal.

Turmeric produces a beautiful yellow color accommodating a rich, woody aroma and warm, pungent flavor when ground.  The spice contains unique aromatic characteristics and antiseptic qualities.

Turmeric is a plant that has a very long history of medicinal use, dating back nearly 4000 years. In Southeast Asia, turmeric is used not only as a principal spice but also as a component in religious ceremonies. Because of its brilliant yellow color, turmeric is also known as “Indian saffron.” Modern medicine has begun to recognize its importance, as indicated by the over 3000 publications dealing with turmeric that came out within the last 25 years.
